The degree of fragmentation of the territory is assessed through an index called "effective mesh-density" , which measures the obstacle to movement due to the presence of "fragmenting elements" in the territory (e.g. elements fragmenting the artificial land cover). The index represents the density of territorial patches (no. of meshes per 1,000 km2) calculated according to the effective mesh-size methodology
