Category: Environmental indicators
Risk type: Land use
Indicator: Soil degradation level
Provider: ISPRA

Degradation is assessed as the ratio of degraded land to the total surface area. The UNCCD, the international reference body for the calculation of the indicator, has proposed a methodology aimed at qualitative evaluation according to an approach that involves the combined use of the following sub-indicators, leaving the possibility of inserting others deemed important on a of a single country: i) land cover and its changes over time, ii) soil productivity, iii) the organic carbon content. The degradation is assessed by analyzing the variation of the aforementioned indicators considering a baseline (2000-2015) and a subsequent reporting period (2004-2019) as a temporal reference.
