On March 16th was held the seminar Nationalism, geoeconomics, protectionism and energy shocks – how should the EU respond?, organized as part of the mission of the Bruegel think tank delegation to Rome.
Italy has been one of the States that have made up the think tank's membership since its foundation and in addition to being represented in the Group of States and in the General Assembly, it is engaged in a continuous dialogue with the think tank on strategic issues and research.
During the seminar it has been discussed whether the EU can use the various crises it is facing to strengthen the union and its industrial policy. The COVID-19 crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the ensuing energy crisis are just a few of the significant challenges the Europea Union has had to deal with in recent years. Nationalism is increasing globally, and several nations are enacting protectionist laws like the US' Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
The event featured the participation of Carlo Altomonte, Non-resident fellow, Bruegel, Riccardo Barbieri Hermitte, Director General of the Treasury, italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, Isabel Vansteenkiste, Director General, International & European Relations, European Central Bank, and Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Director, Bruegel.
The video registration of the seminar will be available on the event page.
